By Carley Stephens, Senior Manager of Community Affairs, Gas South
It’s that time of year again when all of us are thinking more about how we can give back to those who need help the most. At Gas South, giving is always on our minds, as our company purpose is to Be A Fuel For Good by giving back 5% of profits each year to help support children in need. But like many of you, we feel an extra sense of duty during the holiday season.
Along with donating money, we also make a point to provide opportunities for our employees to give back to their communities and make a difference through volunteerism. Some employees are natural volunteers and have engaged in the community long before they were employed by Gas South. Others are not as seasoned and need encouragement and support to find ways to engage meaningfully.
Here are a few tips we’ve gathered from our nonprofit partners to help people who want to volunteer this holiday season:
- When signing up for volunteer opportunities, be sure to read and follow all the instructions they’ve provided
- If you’ve agreed to come but can’t make it to a volunteer event, let the organization know—it’s better for them if you cancel, versus being a no-show
- Come to your first couple of volunteer times ready to observe and learn about the organization. As you get more familiar with how they operate, see if there are any gaps in what they’re doing that you have the skills to help fill
- Consider helping when nonprofits need volunteers and donations the most: January through October. November and December are typically when most people give back to these groups, but nonprofits need support all year long.
- If you loved a volunteer experience or an organization, tell your coworkers, neighbors, family and friends—nonprofits depend on word of mouth to get more volunteers and donations
- Come excited to share your talents and experience with the organization
