In the ever-changing climate of Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR), professionals often find themselves tirelessly advocating for others and championing complex causes as they strive for positive change. Yet, amidst their noble endeavors, it’s easy to overlook one crucial aspect – their own wellbeing.
This May, as part of the Corporate Volunteer Council (CVC) of Atlanta’s recognition of Mental Health Awareness Month, our program committee organized a special event titled “Don’t Let Your Heart Tip.” This program was co-designed and sponsored by longtime CVC member and partner, Kaiser Permanente. The aim was simple yet profound: to remind CSR professionals about the importance of nurturing their own hearts and minds, even as they dedicate themselves to uplifting others.

The event featured a diverse lineup of speakers, each offering unique insights and practical tips. Mindfulness and wellness coach, Brianna Goebel, led everyone through a transformative breathing exercise, guiding attention to the head, body, and most importantly, the heart. Her session served as a powerful reminder to pause, breathe, and realign ourselves when stress threatens to overwhelm.
Dr. Mary M. Pike, Psy.D facilitated engaging discussions among attendees, encouraging everyone to explore their emotions and connect with their peers on a deeper level. It was a valuable opportunity to acknowledge and validate individual feelings in a supportive community.
Chef Asata Reid shared her expertise on the deep connection between food and mental health, underscoring the importance of nourishing our bodies with wholesome ingredients. Her refreshing recipe for Thai Cucumber Quinoa Salad tantalized taste buds and served as a symbolic gesture of self-care through mindful eating.

As we reflect on this enriching event, our hope is to carry forward the lessons learned and prioritize our mental wellbeing in our journey of service and advocacy. By nurturing our hearts, we empower ourselves to continue making a positive impact in the world, one compassionate action at a time.
