By Dr. Rebecca Parshall

In metro Atlanta, a transformative effort called The Atlanta Vision Project is setting out to provide vision screenings, eye exams, and glasses to every elementary school-aged student in need, at no cost to students or their families. Aimed at addressing the challenge of accessing vision care, this initiative has clear objectives: ensuring that every child in our region has the chance to see clearly, learn effectively, and grow confidently.

Vision is fundamental to childhood development, with 80% of learning coming through sight. Yet in Metro Atlanta, nearly 40,000 elementary students who need glasses don’t have them. This isn’t just a learning barrier—it’s a public health issue tied to significant academic, social, and emotional challenges. Vision impairment can lead to poor grades and lack of engagement, and is strongly associated with higher rates of anxiety and depression among children. The Atlanta Vision Project understands that clear vision can be the difference between a struggling student and a thriving one.

How the Atlanta Vision Project Works

The Atlanta Vision Project has a three-step process designed to meet students where they are and make vision care seamless and accessible.

The Power of Partnerships

The Atlanta Vision Project is powered by a network of organizations and individuals dedicated to children’s health and education. Learn4Life, metro Atlanta’s educational collective impact partnership, serves as the coordinating backbone. Several nonprofits, including Vision To Learn, Georgia Lions Lighthouse Foundation, and Prevent Blindness, will provide eye exams and glasses to children in elementary schools. By 2028, The Atlanta Vision Project will partner with all eight of the region’s school districts, along with dozens of other nonprofit and philanthropic partners.

With an estimated 138,000 elementary students in underserved communities across Metro Atlanta, there’s still work to be done. Of these students, approximately 40,000 are in need of glasses but lack access to basic vision care. The Atlanta Vision Project is determined to close this gap, and with the continued support of the community, they’re well on their way.

Community support is essential for sustaining the project and expanding its reach. Local healthcare providers, optometrists, businesses, and donors all contribute to the success of the Atlanta Vision Project, making it possible to offer these services at no cost to families.

Join the Movement

The Atlanta Vision Project invites everyone to get involved in supporting this life-changing mission. Whether through donations, volunteering, or simply spreading the word, you can help ensure that every child in Metro Atlanta has access to the vision care they deserve. By giving children the gift of sight, we’re investing in a brighter, more equitable future for our community.

Clear vision opens doors to learning, creativity, and opportunity. With initiatives like the Atlanta Vision Project, metro Atlanta is taking bold steps to ensure that every child has the chance to thrive—both in school and beyond.
